34613: Metal Asylum - English (7/10)
Untitled document

Norwegian outfit pieced together this debut over the course of four years (and it’s been sitting on the shelf since 2010), surprising since there are some known entities involved, specifically guest vocalists Ski (Deadly Blessing, on four originals plus the Lizzy Borden cover, ‘Red Rum’), Michael Kiske (ex -Helloween/Unisonic) for ‘The Ethereal Dream’ and Graham Bonnet (Rainbow/MSG/Alcatrazz) on ‘Glass Mountain’. Mike Gorham, who would be the real band vocalist, has a Midnight (Crimson Glory) quality about his voice, as ‘A Song For You’ and ‘Doubt’ attempt to mimic the Floridians’ sound.

The title cut is an instrumental. The patchwork quilt approach shows in the variations in volume and production between tracks. ‘White Lightning’ is a slower tune, where Ski gets to hit some high notes, but not like he shines on the religious lyric ‘Liquid Scream’. ‘Kill Again’ retains something of a mid-tempo Crimson feel, likewise the slightly more adventurous ‘March Of The Demons’. No telling how long a follow-up will take, but there’s certainly a foundation (if stabilized) to build upon.
